Welcome Severed Press Author, Nathan Robinson

I would like to introduce an English author with a knack for the macabre. Nathan Robinson’s wonderfully cheerful personality belies his ability to instill fear in his readers, so sit back and enjoy meeting this talented author.

Right-o. Hi everybody!

I’ll be quick, I’ll introduce myself then tell you a little bit about my debut novel. I know you’re busy, so I won’t keep you long.

I’ve been reading for as long as I can remember. I loved Roald Dahl as a kid, so after that horror was a natural step after his twisted children’s tales. It was just so out there and different from everything else. Horror, done well, is never boring as it reminds us of the fragility of our lives and the fact that we aren’t invincible. We can bleed and we can quite often be hurt yet still live to tell the tale.

English was the only thing I was good at school. I wasn’t the best, but it was the only thing I vaguely triumphed at. From about the age of twelve onwards I wrote stupid little stories for my own entertainment. Now for some reason all those C’s stuck with me and here I am today; a minor Z-list author who’s simply happy at being listed on Amazon.

Three years ago my wife and I found out that we were having twins, so I decided to have a proper go at writing and completed my first short story about zombie chickens. I called it ‘The Chicken in Black’ and sent it off to a competition on http://www.spinetinglers.co.uk where a month later I found out I’d won first prize. A cheque for £100 followed and there I was; a writer who didn’t just write for fun. I’d been paid!

More short story acceptances followed from many different editors and publishers including Rainstorm Press, House of Horror/Panic Press, Black Hound Press, Static Movement, Knight Watch Press and many more including seven more monthly winners on Spinetinglers. I wasn’t exactly rolling in it but it’s nice to have a hobby that pays a little back. One of the proudest moments of my ‘career’ would have to be my acceptance for story ‘Top of the Heap’ by www.pseudopod.org run by great bunch of people who turned one of silly stories bloody marvellous podcast. I’d been adapted which was great but then it started to get fantastic reviews, it was even voted one of the best stories of 2011 on the forum. Out of over fifty stories throughout the year I came in second favourite. Plus they gave $100 for the rights. Why would I not want to write?

I write when I can. I used to write at night, but with two young children in the house sleep becomes a precious commodity, currency even.

Some would see this as bad at the time, but I was made redundant as a builder and had to start over, first washing cars in the depths of winter for minimum wage, then I landed a job delivering office furniture the length and breadth of the country which consisted of me sitting in the passenger seat of a van for three hours a day.

So what do I do for three hours?”

“Anything you want.”

So I write and read on the company dime, as long as I get the job done they don’t care. I love it. I read a book a week, even taking up the post of chief book reviewer at www.snakebitehorror.co.uk where people send me free books for me to give my opinion on. Please don’t hate me.

I completed my first novel this summer and sent it off to Severed Press, an Australian horror publisher whose anthology Dead Bait I thoroughly enjoyed. My thought being that the horror market in the Southern Hemisphere wouldn’t be as saturated as the rest of the world. Strangely, I was right. Severed Press accepted ‘Starers’ and bingo I was a fully fledged author with my own book out, I wasn’t sharing the pages with anybody, just me. I never fantasised about mansions, supermodels and Ferraris. All I ever dreamt about was having my own book published, now that dreams come true what is everything that comes after? Bonus? Extras?

Who cares? I’ve family that loves me and a book deal, so whatever happens next . . . it’s all a dream anyway.

I was inspired to write Starers one evening when I was drawing the curtains to my living room and I saw an old man at the bus stop across the road staring at our house. Now, we live in a newly built house and we often have people looking and pointing at our house as it stands out from the older properties on our street, so this was nothing unusual. For whatever reason I looked out the window about an hour later and the old man was still stood at the bus stop still staring at our house. So then the seed popped. What if he was still there in the morning? Still staring. So I started writing, first as a short story before it took off on its own tangent. What if more people joined the old man? What if a crowd of hundreds appeared outside my house, just staring. What would you do? What could you do? So I made up a typical family called the Keene’s and put them in that situation and let the story flow from there. So much so I’m currently penning a sequel with a third in the planning stages. All this from an old man staring from across the road; there must be something wrong with me.

Imagine if you found yourself the attention of the entire world . . .

The dysfunctional Keene family awaken one Saturday to find several strangers and neighbours staring at their home. Events turn more bizarre when more hypnotised strangers arrive, all seemingly transfixed with those within the Keene household. As the ominous crowd gathers and grows larger by the hour the Keene’s find themselves under siege in their own home. With hundreds, then thousands of bodies pressing against the walls of their home, a rising body count and grim premonitions plaguing their dreams, the family must work together to discover who or what is controlling the Starers.

Meet Jimmy Pudge: Horror Author, Working Man and Modern Day Philosopher

Jimmy Pudge,

What can I say? I have been looking forward to this interveiw for a while. A man after my own heart, horror is my life! I’ve always liked your style. You’re not afraid to be yourself and that’s the way it should be. Your writing is edgy, exciting and hard to put down. Well, nobody pulled my cord and we’re not here to hear me prattle on, so let me introduce to you, the man, the myth, the lesbian trapped in a man’s body…Jimmy Pudge!

Mark! What’s going on, brother?

What should I say about writing? For me it’s a release, man. A release from cleaning doo doo toilets at the motel and thinking about people that joke me when they see me riding home on my bicycle. I enjoy writing, just as much as I enjoy picking up women at Wal-Mart.  You see, writing is a lot like delivering a pickup line, you got to be smooth, baby. If you see a chick in the produce section, you don’t want to be nervous and stutter and spit all over her face when you say something like, “Baby, if you were a transformer, you’d be Optimus Fine!” See what I’m saying? Writing is an art, and it’s up to the individual when it comes to releasing it. Maybe you a writing machine and put out 5,000 words a day. Maybe you write once a month and don’t even keep track of your word count. Regardless, as long as you enjoy what you’re writing and you don’t over think that shit, you gonna write something you can send out or self-publish. Once you get them comments coming in, oh man, those hurtful heartbreaking comments, your skin will get tougher and maybe you’ll learn something you didn’t realize about your writing. The key to being a good writer, brother, is to send the work out for people to see. Don’t be afraid or ashamed. You’re not trying to be the next damn Billy Shakespeare. You just want to keep improving, you feel me?

People ask me all the time, “Jimmy, why are your stories so fucked up, man? What’s the deal with you, partner?” The deal is I’m writing for fun, not for fame or profit. I think all writers should be like this. Write what you want to write, not what you think someone else wants.

That’s pretty much all the advice I got on writing. Basically, beat your own drum to the rhythm in your head.

Now, I been writing for a while. Had many rejections before I turned to the art of self-publishing. I started my craft when I was in prison. Had a lot of downtime in the night to compose stories and shit. I’d never really tried writing before then. The words came slowly. My first story was like a bad children’s book. Inmates who couldn’t even read were laughing at that story. I think it was about a magic pussy cat named BJ who worked at McDonald’s. BJ had a little head, so his cap kept slipping over his eyes. He tried to empty a grease trap, but he couldn’t see because of the hat bill and the hot grease splashed him so he had to go to the hospital. He tried to sue, but he put down the wrong date the incident occurred, so the judge dismissed it. BJ died one night as he fell asleep smoking on a cigarette and his trailer burnt down.  That entire story was about five sentences long I think.

But I kept plugging away and over the years I was able to understand the writing process a little bit better. I enjoy reading spicy romance novels and horror, some science fiction, mystery, and a good blend of shit, man. My stories tend to border on pulp fiction, some being complete horror tales and others being greasy, raunchy mysteries. My first self-published title “YO A$$ IS GRA$$: Tales From a Rednek Gangsta” managed to sell over five copies during its first month alone, which was phenomenal since I only purchased three of them. It has only been roses with the additional releases of “Bad Billy,” “Ice Cream Man” and “The Dick.” I also do poetry, man. Poetry about life, going to Wal-Mart and picking up ladies. I’ve got two titles out, “From My Cracked Out Heart” and “Bar Napkins and Bathroom Stalls.” I also have a standalone short story for sale called “Bitch Gone Crazy in the Attic.”

My newest title is “Devil Inside,” and it should be coming out at the end of October. “Devil Inside” is about the spirit of serial killer Junior Boyd being released. Boyd kills certain types of ladies with certain types of assets, and the only thing that can stop him is a psychopath named Big Country. This is probably the most romantic story I have ever written.

Alright, I’ve shot enough shit. Here are the blurbs and links to my books on Amazon. “Bad Billy” is permanently free. If you’d like to try one of my titles, go with “Bad Billy first.” That way you’re not out of any dough.

Thanks for having me, Mark.

Azure Boone, A Wonderful Talent in the Literary World

Good Afternoon!

I would like to introduce you all to a very talented author, Azure Boone. She volunteered to be my first author interview and I am very honored!

Azure Boone, welcome to my blog! Please tell us about yourself and your writing.

Mark, so awesome of you to have me over for a visit on your blog! Don’t we just LOVE doing this? Control your giddiness, please.

When I’m a guest author on a blog, I ask myself, what is it that readers may wonder about writers? And I try to answer some of that.

For me, I’m not just a writer (nobody usually is) I’m a full time mother of eight children, soon to be nine, and wife and teacher.

One of the greatest wonders readers have when it comes to me as a writer, is how on earth do I find time? Sanity? Silence?

Ironically, the answer is, “If it weren’t for all the kids I have, I’d never have time to write.”

Thankfully, before I became a writer, I was a parent that believed in training a kid up in the way that they should go. Responsible, unselfish, hard workers, bearing one another’s burdens.  So, by the time I began writing, they were already trained and it was just a matter of adjusting schedules and workloads.  Wasn’t all that hard, especially with the kids becoming more capable in every work area.

Silence? Sanity?

I like to think of mothers as the most adaptive creatures in the world. They take their children “into” themselves and they become a “part” of them. It’s odd, but, the noise, the chaos, is like that fan you had to have on in order to sleep. They’re like tentacles, and when they’re not around, you feel oddly naked or like you’re missing parts.

I learned to work with and around the noise and distractions. I sit right among the madness and create. If I enter a phase of the creative process that requires silence, I give them things to do elsewhere. That’s it.

My favorite thing to write is erotic romance. Doesn’t matter the genre, erotic romance is always a given in my stories, for me, stories are not complete without romance, and romance is not complete without erotica.

So, what have I accomplished so far in my five years of becoming a professional writer? After several years of intense learning (still learning, however) I self-published my first book, UNDER-GODS, a Christian Fantasy Romance.

My second book was traditionally published, THE DEVIL WANTS A CHINA DOLL, and is a Paranormal Erotic Romance.

My third book, JOHNNY BLUE, is a Contemporary Erotic Romance.

And now, I am currently co-authoring a huge series with my critique partner, Kenra Daniels. The title of the entire series is called ARCHANGELS’ CREED. The first twelve books in the series will be THE SUMMONING with the archangel, KASSERN, being the first summoned angel to kick off the series. The genre is very mixed, a sort of spiritual, urban fantasy, erotica and since that genre doesn’t technically exist, we’ll be self- publishing it.

Well, I hate long winded people, so, I’m going to close with blurbs for each of the books above and links to buy if anybody is interested. Thank you Mark, for having me over to your blog, I appreciate it! Take care everybody.
